Bees are not pets; they are wild by nature. Bees have been living
near, and working for, humans for at least a thousand years, but they
have not become our pets or domestic animals. They are creatures
which are independent of human beings. Modern bees continue to
create their own wax homes, they continue to make honey and live
on this natural product the same way as in centuries past. Bees are
doing what nature meant them to do, but people often prevent them
from fully utilizing their natural instincts..
One of the most critical interventions in a bees’ life is the invention of
frames. Before this, beekeepers used frameless hives which were
about the same as bees’ natural living conditions. Unfortunately,
these conditions are not transferred to beekeeping with the use of
frames. The size of frames are often selected not according to the
bees’ desire. As a result, the bees living in frame hives often swarm
arbitrarily. It is almost impossible to control swarming. There are
other conditions in framed hives which are different from a bee’s
natural home and are very hard on these creatures. Despite of this,
frame beekeeping is very popular because it is convenient for
beekeepers. In frame beekeeping there are plenty of opportunities for
beekeepers to do what they want. Often their actions are against the
bees’ nature. We still do not know the whole affect of frames on a
bee’s life. The influence of frame beekeeping remains to be studied in
many respects. What we can say for sure is that we can balance
negative and positive effects of frames if we find ways to allow bees
to live according to their natural world whenever possible.
Another example of how we ignore bee nature concerns drones. For
many beekeepers, drones seem to be necessary only for the
fertilization of the queen. These beekeepers try to reduce the number
of drones. In contrast, bees keep many drones in a colony. Maybe
they know better how many drones they need and for what. It is
known that drones can generate heat and warm the larva. This can be
observed when a colony is lacking in bees, but at the same time is full
of its larva and young bees. Apparently the entire contribution of
drones has not yet been fully understood and it is therefore not
necessary to regulate their numbers without considering the wishes
of bees.
Early beekeepers understood very well that bees were wild in their
natural world and that they did not feel attached to their human boss.
Early beekeepers tried to disturb the bees as seldom as possible.
They tried to help a bee to live in conditions that differed little from
living in the wild. Beekeeping was always considered an art, for an
apiarist has to understand the bees’ nature, not only learn how to
deal with bees. Modern beekeepers do not understand that bees are
wild animals who are absolutely independent from human beings. This
leads to many mistakes in modern beekeeping which often endanger
the bees’ life.
