ABOUT THE AUTHOR OF "RUSSIAN BEES: Successful Beekeeping"

The author of this book, Yurii N. Kulikoff, was born in 1930 in the agricultural district of the Yaroslavl region of Russia. The first 9 years of his life were spent with a family of farmers. His grandfather and father were permanently keeping bees , and their apiaries consisted of several dozen hives and bee logs. Young Yurii helped with these apiaries and acquired a love for bees. Then he did not have an opportunity to work with bees for many years. His family moved to the nearest big city, Yaroslavl, where he finished school cum laude and was recommended to Moscow State University, the largest University in Russia.

In 1954 he graduated in physics. Subsequently he worked on some military projects in the area of nuclear fission and had to live in secret places where it was impossible to keep bees. Finally he was moved to Obninsk, in the Kaluga region, a town which boasted the world's first nuclear station. He has continued to live there since 1959. He worked as an engineer at the nuclear station, continued his scientific research and finished his technical dissertation. His work in nuclear energy made him to understand the danger of pollution and the importance of living in balance with nature. He spent all his free time at the nearest farms and forests.

In 1963 he started his first colony of bees. To acquire practical skills in beekeeping he used to work the summers as a volunteer assistant at the nearest co-op apiary. Later he enrolled at the Beekeeper Advanced Training Institute and graduated in 1967. In the town of Obninsk he organized a society of beekeepers named "Russian Bee" and was its chairman for several years.

Despite the acquired knowledge and experience, he and other beekeepers in the Kaluga region had many failures in working with bees. That is why he decided to study the ways of beekeepers of the past. He devoted one winter to research this subject in the State Library in Moscow. This gave him not only new knowledge, but also a new attitude towards beekeeping. He found that beekeeping is not a trade, but an art based on an understanding of the nature of bees. The results of this approach were so good that he did not regret the failures of the past.

Now Yurii N. Kulikoff has an apiary of 40 bee colonies of Middle Russian Bees. In winter he keeps bees at his house in Obninsk. In the summer he transfers colonies to the local natural mellifluous plants, which fortunately are still nearby. For years he consistently gets a rich crops of honey and therefore he may be called a lucky beekeeper, but it's better to call him a wise beekeeper.

Nowadays Yurii N. Kulikoff makes every effort to distribute his experience and to promote a natural way of beekeeping.
